Pilot Certificate Expiration Paradox
Pilot Certificate Expiration Paradox
- I pointed out a common media misconception regarding pilot licenses, responding to a headline about John David Duggar allowing his pilot license to "expire."
- I clarified that FAA-issued pilot certificates (licenses) do not expire.
- Instead, only a pilot's currency expires (which requires flight reviews, night landings, instrument checks, or medical certification to remain active). I noted that my own Private Pilot certificate remains valid indefinitely, even if I am not currently active. In fact, I still carry my FAA card in my wallet, even though I have not been pilot in command for decades (it's right next to my Ordained Minister of the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster card).
These facts are as Randal recalls them, but much time has passed for most of this. If you find a factual error, please email realmerlyn@gmail.com.
