SQL Pronunciation Rant
SQL Pronunciation Rant
- I expressed frustration over how technical screencasters and developers mispronounce database names:
- I criticized the pronunciation of PostgreSQL as "postgrey", explaining that it likely stems from pronouncing "SQL" as "sequel", leading to "Post-grey-Sequel" and then dropping the final part. I emphasized that it should be pronounced "post-gres-cue-ell" or shortened to "Postgres".
- I noted that Michael Widenius ("Monty", the creator of MySQL) explicitly states the database is pronounced "My Ess Cue Ell", and should not be pronounced as "My Sequel".
These facts are as Randal recalls them, but much time has passed for most of this. If you find a factual error, please email realmerlyn@gmail.com.
