Meeting a Costa Concordia Survivor
In 2012, on a cruise shortly after the infamous Costa Concordia grounding off Isola del Giglio (which occurred in January 2012), I had an unforgettable encounter.
The Conversation with our Wine Steward
- While dining in one of the ship's classy dining rooms, we were being served by our wine steward.
- The topic of the Concordia shipwreck came up, and we started to ask him if that tragic event had had any industry-wide or operational consequences.
- To our absolute astonishment, he quietly informed us: he had been working on the Costa Concordia as part of the crew when it struck the reef and capsized.
A Living Piece of History
- Meeting a crew member who had survived such a major, chaotic, and historic maritime disaster—and who was already back at work serving passengers on another cruise ship—was a jaw-dropping and deeply moving moment.
