The Legendary Juneau Pub Crawls

  • The Legendary Juneau Pub Crawls

  • Over the course of many Alaskan Geek Cruises (such as the Linux Lunacy and Arctic Exposure series), the annual Juneau Pub Crawl became a legendary tradition both for the cruise participants and within the town of Juneau itself.
  • Key Details

    • Local Connection: Because the pub crawls occurred year after year on similar schedules, the local Juneau bartenders—who rarely changed—remembered me and the Geek Cruise group fondly from one year to the next.
    • The Circuit: The pub crawl typically began with a large group dinner at the Twisted Fish and traversed nearly a dozen bars around town.
    • The Spontaneous Gig: During one memorable pub crawl, one of the Geek Cruise guests stepped up during a local musician's break and played an incredible hour-long set, leaving everyone in the bar amazed.
  • The Historic Juneau Trips & Pub Crawls

    • Juneau 1 (May 2000 - Perl Whirl 2000):
      • The inaugural Juneau Geek Pub Crawl was led by Bill Harp.
      • The designated lunch spot was extremely short-handed, so Bill stepped into the kitchen and ended up helping them cook lunch for the group.
      • While the pub crawl went on, I spent my time sitting at the local Juneau public library to use their Wi-Fi, since the M.S. Volendam had no onboard internet connectivity at the time.
    • Juneau 3 (August 2001 - ScriptScape):
    • Juneau 4 (May 2002 - MacMania):
    • Juneau 6 (September 2002 - JavaJam 3):
    • Juneau 7 (June 2003 - Arctic Exposure):
    • Juneau 8 (September 2003 - Linux Lunacy 3):
    • Juneau 9 (June 2004 - Arctic Exposure 2):
