EVENT

Veracruz Conference and Richard Stallman

  • In late November 2004, I traveled to Veracruz, Mexico, to present at a technology conference. It was my first time flying into Mexico, and my first time staying in the country for more than two days.
  • At the conference, I delivered a 4-hour tutorial on "Introduction to Perl Objects" and a keynote address detailing the past, present, and future of Perl.
  • A highlight of the event was watching Richard Stallman (RMS) deliver his famous, traditional "software libre" (free software) presentation. Remarkably, he delivered the entire talk in straightforward, fluent Spanish. I was so fascinated that I used my Canon PowerShot S70 in movie mode to capture two video snippets of his Spanish lecture.
  • Because the conference took place over Thanksgiving week, I found myself in Mexico on Thanksgiving Day. Wanting to keep a small piece of the American holiday tradition alive with a local twist, I hunted down a restaurant that served Turkey Enchiliadas, which turned out to be a delicious and memorable Thanksgiving dinner!
