Web Services Cruise of May 2004

  • Web Services Cruise of May 2004

  • In May 2004, the 21st Geek Cruises voyage sailed from New York City on the Carnival Legend, representing our first Geek Cruise on a Carnival ship. Co-branded as "Web Services At Sea", the cruise featured intensive seminars alongside classic shipboard life.
  • Old San Juan Pub Crawl & DonQ Cristal

    • In the afternoon of Day 4, we made port in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
    • Keeping with my longstanding tradition, Neil Bauman and I led a lively pub crawl through Old San Juan, visiting a dozen of our favorite bars.
    • Throughout the crawl, DonQ Cristal served neat was our absolute preferred drink of choice wherever we could find it, owing to its incredibly smooth, roll-off-the-tongue character compared to standard Bacardi.
  • Trellis Bay Cybercafe & Karaoke Victory

    • In Tortola, British Virgin Islands (Day 6), we scheduled a geek excursion to the scenic Trellis Bay Cybercafe. Unfortunately, the power went out minutes before our arrival and didn't return until it was time to leave.
    • That evening back on the ship, I entered the Karaoke Contest and took first place! I won a bottle of sparkling wine for my rendition of "My Way". My friend Mari captured my award-winning performance on video, which we successfully preserved.
  • Bill Harp's Stage Hijacking

    • During one of the ship's evening variety shows, a performer riding a unicycle scanned the audience for a volunteer and selected my buddy and Stonehenge business partner, Bill Harp, who was sitting in the front row.
    • What the performer didn't realize was that Bill was a highly talented entertainer and former professional clown who knew exactly how to command a stage, juggle, and blow up balloon animals.
    • The performer positioned Bill on the far edge of the stage to assist. However, whenever the unicyclist wasn't looking, Bill would slyly pick up the remaining juggling pins and start juggling them himself, playing the crowd with perfect comedic timing.
    • Bill's hilarious stage-hijacking antics stole the show and got a massive amount of laughs from the entire theater audience.
