Vasquez Rocks

  • Vasquez Rocks

  • Vasquez Rocks is a 932-acre park located in Agua Dulce, California, famous for its spectacular, slanted sandstone rock formations formed by rapid erosion and tectonic uplift along the San Andreas Fault.
  • Hollywood's Favorite Backdrop & The Studio Zone

    • These rocks are incredibly famous and instantly recognizable to movie and television fans worldwide.
    • Their immense popularity as a filming location stems from being located within the "Thirty-Mile Zone" (also known as the "studio zone" or TMZ)—the historical 30-mile radius centered in Los Angeles used by Hollywood unions to determine travel rules, union rates, per diems, and local transit.
    • Because it was within this 30-mile limit, studios could shoot on location here without incurring the heavy expenses, travel time, and per diems associated with taking a crew out-of-zone.
    • As a result, it became Hollywood's go-to backdrop for alien planets, prehistoric landscapes, and rugged Western territories. Its most famous role is undoubtedly as "Vulcan" and "Alpha 177" in Star Trek (most famously Captain Kirk's legendary duel with the Gorn in the episode "Arena"), as well as backdrops in Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey, The Flintstones, Bonanza, The Twilight Zone, The Outer Limits, Blazing Saddles, and countless other films and shows.
    • The list of movies, TV shows, commercials, and music videos filmed here is staggering—spanning from early classic Westerns to modern sci-fi blockbusters (as compiled on Wikipedia's List of productions using the Vasquez Rocks as a filming location).
  • My Visit to Vasquez Rocks (May 2006)

    • In May of 2006, I made a dedicated trip to climb these iconic slanted rocks myself and capture their dramatic, otherworldly shapes from every angle.
    • Standing among these legendary formations where so much television history was filmed was a real thrill, and my camera captured the beautiful contrasts between the sharp geological ridges and the brilliant California sky.
