Hip Replacement and Chronic Pain Relief
Hip Replacement and Chronic Pain Relief
- A personal medical story about my hip replacement surgery and its unexpected positive effect on my blood pressure.
The Surgery
- In January 2024, after two years of chronic low-level pain following an injury, I underwent a successful hip replacement surgery.
- Because I was officially low-income at the time, the procedure was fully covered by medical insurance, which was a massive relief.
Unexpected Health Benefit
- Following the surgery, the constant low-level pain I had lived with vanished.
- Immediately, my daily blood pressure readings dropped by 15-20 points, sometimes measuring as low as 100/55.
- With my doctor's permission, I was able to stop taking both of my prescription blood pressure medications.
- The experience taught me that my body had been reacting to the chronic pain stressor by keeping my blood pressure elevated, and resolving the joint injury fully cured the hypertension.
