New Orleans Bourbon Street Musician

  • New Orleans Bourbon Street Musician

  • A classic personal anecdote illustrating my "Forrest Gump of Tech" encounters.
  • The 1999 WebDev Conference

    • In 1999, I attended a web development conference in New Orleans, Louisiana.
    • On Tuesday evening, while exploring Bourbon Street, I popped into a quiet side-street bar where a single musician was playing guitar and keyboard.
    • I walked up to take pictures of him using my brand-new Casio twist-body digital camera.
    • Intrigued by the new Technology, the musician stopped mid-song and asked: "Hey, is that a digital camera?" I confirmed it was and sent him the photos.
  • The Call-Outs

    • The next evening, I returned to the same bar, which was now filled with about 30 patrons. As soon as I walked in, the musician stopped mid-song and shouted: "Hey dude... thanks for those pictures from last night!"
    • On Friday night, I brought a group of new friends to the bar, which was now packed with a line out the door. Upon entering, the musician spotted me again and yelled a call-out, prompting my friends to ask in disbelief how many times I had been there.
    • Amazingly, when I returned to the same conference in New Orleans a year later (in 2000) and entered the bar, the musician recognized me and called me out yet again.
These facts are as Randal recalls them, but much time has passed for most of this. If you find a factual error, please email realmerlyn@gmail.com.
