First Trip to Australia and Creation of miniCPAN

  • First Trip to Australia and Creation of miniCPAN

  • In July 2001, I made my first trip to Australia to attend and speak at the SAGE-AU 2001 conference in Adelaide, followed by a brief stop in Sydney.
  • Creation of miniCPAN

    • During this trip, to solve the challenge of carrying gigabytes of legacy archives on offline mirrors, I conceived and wrote the original miniCPAN script. This script mirrored only the most recent version of each CPAN module.
    • The script was published in my column and later productized by the Perl community into the official CPAN::Mini distribution. See CPAN.
  • Sydney Perl Mongers Talk

    • I stopped in Sydney to deliver a technical presentation to the local Sydney Perl Mongers user group.
  • Titanium Powerbook Screen Break

    • Just as I was starting the week in Adelaide, I managed to break the screen of my nearly brand-new Titanium Powerbook.
    • As a result, I could not upload or manage photos from my camera during the rest of the trip and had to stop taking photos.
