Widmer Hefeweizen in Anchorage
- A humorous Travel anecdote from the 1990s involving Portland's famous craft beer.
The Incident
- In the 1990s, Portland was emerging as a microbrew capital, and local favorite Widmer Hefeweizen was on tap at every local bar. It became rather boring to always see the same option.
- While traveling in Anchorage, Alaska, I went to a waterfront bar (possibly named "20 Above").
- The beer menu featured a line: "Today's special, ask your server."
- When I asked the server, she enthusiastically replied: "Oh my goodness, you're in for such a treat... all the way from Portland Oregon, here's Widmer Hefeweisen!"
- I had to stop her and tell her that I was from Portland and that was the standard beer back home, which left her quite disheartened.
