Tropidera Bar

  • Tropidera Bar

  • The Tropidera Bar was a major establishment located in La Grande, Oregon. It was purchased and operated by me and my close friend and business partner Bill Harp.
  • The Acquisition

    • In the early 1990s, I was experiencing a massive influx of insane amounts of cash generated by selling high-demand Perl programming trainings via contractors through Stonehenge Consulting Services, Inc..
    • Flush with this capital, Bill and I purchased the Tropidera Bar, which was the largest bar in La Grande, Oregon, for a remarkably low price.
  • Operations & Atmosphere

    • As the biggest bar in town, the Tropidera attracted a lively, eclectic mix of local cowboys and eastern Oregon college students.
    • Bill Harp, with his gregarious, larger-than-life personality (famously described by Tom Christiansen as a "human blink tag" who had been a roller-disco DJ when he first met me at Hillsboro Skate World), managed operations.
  • Closure & OLCC Incident

    • The Tropidera Bar ceased operations after the OLCC (Oregon Liquor Control Commission) revoked its liquor license.
    • The fateful revocation occurred because co-owner Bill Harp hired an underage bartender, leading to strict enforcement action by state regulators.
