Pool and Go-Karts with Linus

  • During one of my famous Stonehenge Consulting Services, Inc. parties at OSCON, I invited Linus Torvalds to attend.
  • Linus showed up at the party and proved to be a highly skilled pool player.
  • Following the party, Linus invited me to his house in Portland to play pool on his home table.
  • I managed to beat Linus at 9-ball, but Linus got the upper hand and beat me at 8-ball.
  • While hanging out, Linus also invited me to go to a nearby indoor go-kart track.
    • Linus absolutely loved go-karting, while I admittedly found myself to be terrible at go-kart racing.
    • Hilariously, Linus's racing name displayed on the go-kart leaderboard was "Tux Racer" (no kidding!).
  • This friendly, competitive relationship represents one of the many warm, personal connections I shared with Linus over our years in the Portland and open-source communities.
